Joseph is an Associate in the London office of HFW, specialising in international commercial dispute resolution for clients in the marine and offshore sectors. He has experience of disputes arising from charter parties, bills of lading, shipbuilding, ship sale and purchase, commodities supply agreements, piracy and general average.

Joseph has represented clients in both English High Court proceedings and international arbitration under a range of institutional rules. He has acted for shipowners, P&I Clubs, commodity traders, and listed energy / logistics companies.

Recently, Joseph spent time on board a client's Handysize combined chemical and oil tanker for a voyage in the North Sea, giving him a unique insight into the practical operations of tankers and life on board generally.

Joseph has also recently advised extensively on the legal and commercial implications of international and local environmental regulations affecting the maritime sector, including the "IMO 2020" sulphur emissions limits, the further carbon emissions reduction initiatives recently adopted by the IMO, the potential inclusion of shipping in the EU's emissions trading system, and local regulations requiring at-berth shore power.

During his training, Joseph undertook a six month secondment in the firm's Melbourne office, where he was involved in offshore oil and gas disputes. He also spent time in the firm's transactional shipping and commodities teams, where he gained valuable experience drafting commercial contracts relating to complex ship finance transactions, ship sale and purchase, and the transport and sale of oil and gas.

Joseph is a keen musician and sailor, and has represented the firm at the Baltic Exchange Warwick Cup sailing competition.

Joseph is qualified in England and Wales.
