Costas is a very experienced lawyer in contentious insurance and reinsurance matters, international arbitration and commercial litigation. He has conducted in the region of 100 or more contentious commercial disputes, whether in arbitration or litigation, often with an international element. He is a CEDR qualified mediator and has resolved a considerable number of disputes by mediation or alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Costas regularly acts for policyholders, insurers, brokers and reinsurers in relation to large, complex commercial claims including (re)insurance coverage, binding authority/coverholder, defence and subrogation claims in property/BI, casualty/liability, political risk/trade credit, specie and energy/construction. He also has considerable experience in professional indemnity/E&O and legacy/run-off matters. His experience includes the Lloyd's litigation, the PA spiral, Underwriting pool disputes, asbestos, pollution, Madoff, California wildfires; Australian Bushfires; hurricane events, Thai floods, cross-border political risk/trade credit and specie claims.

Costas has conducted many commercial arbitrations and so they are confidential. He has headed teams in cross-border disputes, whether under civil law or common law jurisdictions and especially in the US, Europe and the MENA region.

Costas' reported cases include; KUCC & ors v Minet & ors, (2003) (construction); Allianz v Aigaion, Court of Appeal (a leading case on brokers' liabilities), JSC Bank v Ablyasov & ors (2010) (a leading case on freezing orders/fraud claims); Apostolides v Orams (2010) ECJ and Court of Appeal (a leading case on EU and public international law); and AXA v Arab Insurance Group (2015), Court of Appeal (a leading case on avoidance/rescission). He is also the lead partner for the Hellenic Republic on the investor / state ICSID international arbitration matter, Safa v Hellenic Republic (2016).

Costas has handled arbitrations under ad hoc, trade and institutional arbitrations (e.g. ARIAS, UNCITRAL, ICSID, ICC, LCIA and LMAA). He has been appointed as an arbitrator (including ICC).

Costas is a member of the BILA, IRLA, IBA, ICC, LCIA and LMAA. He is also an accredited member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He lectures regularly on key legal, arbitration and insurance/reinsurance issues.

Costas is a member of the firm's litigation funding committee and has regularly advised clients on all aspects of litigation funding.

Costas is recommended as a leading insurance and reinsurance lawyer and as an arbitration expert in the legal directories and is named as one of the UK's leading insurance and reinsurance lawyers in the Legal Media Group Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers and in the International Who's Who of Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers.

Costas is qualified in England and Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
