About Alessio
Alessio Sbraga is a Partner in HFW’s Shipping team in London. He specialises in both international commercial dispute resolution and environmental maritime compliance and regulatory advisory work arising out of the marine and offshore sectors.
He has over 18 years’ experience of advising in respect of all types of contracts (including charterparties, bills of lading, sale contracts, MOA, ship management agreements, shipbuilding, off-shore, fuel procurement contracts and offtake agreements) and handling large, complex and multi-jurisdictional disputes, and litigation in both the English High Court and in arbitration.
He also advises extensively on international maritime environmental compliance and regulatory issues across the whole physical transport and fuel supply chains, including those relating to MARPOL (marine environment and air pollution), sustainability, decarbonisation, the adoption of sustainable fuels (biofuels, ammonia and methanol), emissions reduction strategies, sustainable practices and ESG policy implications.
Alessio has an international practice, which involves him advising all the main stakeholders in the physical shipping and supply chains, including shipowners, charterers, technical managers, ship operators, fuel suppliers, P&I clubs, banks, insurance companies, and underwriters.
Alessio formed part of BIMCO’s Carbon Intensity Impact Study working group and sub-committee responsible for drafting time charter and voyage clauses addressing both MARPOL (EEXI and CII) and the EU ETS. Most recently he formed part of the BIMCO sub-committee responsible for drafting the Shipman 2024 clause addressing Fuel EU Maritime. Alessio was also a member of the BIMCO sub-committee responsible for drafting charterparty clauses in response to the IMO 2020 sulphur emission regulations.
He presents regularly on behalf of BIMCO on shipping emissions regulations and related topics.
Alessio is ranked as a one of the sustainability legal leaders championing the green transition in the UK by the Legal 500 2026 and is a sustainability ambassador for the firm’s Shipping team.
Alessio is qualified in England and Wales, and speaks fluent Italian.
