The Rotterdam Rules: what's happening?
Twenty-one states have now signed up to the Rotterdam Rules following the UN's official 'open for signing' ceremony in Rotterdam on 23 September. If twenty states "ratify, approve, accept" or "accede to" the convention, it will come into force twelve months after the twentieth state has done so.

Piracy update
In the last 18 months, HFW have acted for shipowners and underwriters in over 30 cases where major commercial vessels have been hijacked by Somali pirates. Since the incidents of piracy escalated in the Somali region, the approach of the shipping community to these incidents has evolved significantly: specific anti-piracy measures have been introduced and the efforts of multinational taskforces and national navies do seem to be having an impact.
