About Michael
Mike is a Partner within the HFW’s Shipping Team and Complex Environment group, joining HFW in 2009.
He handles both marine casualties (fires, collisions, groundings and salvage) and charterparty disputes, acting predominantly for Owners / Charterers and their H&M, P&I and War Risk insurers, developing a specialism advising on jurisdiction, limitation and wreck removal, as well as liability under the underlying contracts of carriage. Notable cases include “SANCHI” c/w “CF CRYSTAL”; “GOLDEN RAY”; “MARE DORICUM” and “YM WITNESS”. He is able to appreciate the client’s perspective and commercial concerns having spent time on secondment at Maersk.
Mike has been trusted to support the clients who have experienced missile strikes, boardings and detentions by the Houthis, vessel detentions and crew kidnaps in Nigeria and hijackings by Somali pirates, including practical, logistical and bespoke contractual response, compliance with the Terrorism Act 2000 and liability management and GA recoveries post release.
Additionally he has advised on yacht casualties and maritime boundary disputes.
