In this instalment, our Global Senior Partner Giles Kavanagh speaks with Michael Gill, Director of Legal Affairs and External Relations at ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

Michael shares insights from more than 20 years in the aviation industry, reflecting on ICAO’s pivotal role as a United Nations agency responsible for setting global standards and regulations for civil aviation. He discusses the organisation’s response to the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, including the acceleration of digital transformation and the importance of maintaining global connectivity during times of crisis.

Looking ahead, Michael outlines ICAO’s strategic priorities for 2026–2028, including the ambitious goals of zero fatalities and net-zero emissions by 2050, and the drive to build a connected, accessible air transport system that supports social and economic development worldwide. He also highlights the increasing recognition of international air law as a strategic objective, and the importance of consensus and collaboration among ICAO’s 193 member states in navigating geopolitical tensions and advancing sustainability.
