HFW’s Jonathan Goulding has been named by The Lawyer as one of the UK’s ‘Hot 100’ lawyers for 2025.

The Lawyer says that the list recognises “excellence” from across the industry and the lawyers doing “amazing, important work”, adding “it is a celebration of the stars of today”.

Jonathan specialises in complex litigation arising from major marine and offshore casualties, and recently advised the Republic of South Africa on its victory in a long-running dispute over the ownership of £32 million of silver bars salvaged from a vessel sunk in the Indian Ocean during World War Two, which went all the way to the Supreme Court. The case generated significant media interest and resulted in Jonathan being The Times’ Lawyer of the Week.

Before becoming a lawyer in 2008, Jonathan spent 18 years in the Royal Navy, serving at sea in frigates and destroyers throughout the world. He was command qualified and as a Specialist Navigation Officer on the staff of Flag Officer Sea Training, he was responsible for training warship navigating officers and captains prior to their deployment on global operations.

Jonathan also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Navigation and is BOSIET and MIST certified, enabling him to travel offshore.

Paul Dean, Global Head of Shipping, HFW: “Jonathan is one of our rising stars and is establishing himself as one of the shipping industry’s leading lawyers for complex litigation arising out of casualties and other crises. We’re proud to have him as part of our global team, and very pleased to see him recognised by The Lawyer.”

HFW’s market-leading global shipping practice comprises more than 220 shipping lawyers and Master Mariners throughout the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, specialising in dry shipping, admiralty and crisis management, and transactional work for clients across the industry.

HFW has more top-tier rankings for shipping in legal directories Chambers and The Legal 500 than any other law firm, and is ranked by The Times as one of the UK’s top maritime practices.

HFW was recently voted UK Law Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards.
