HFW Continues To Expand Global Disputes Practice With Hong Kong Partner Hire

16 September 2021

HFW has continued to expand its global disputes practice with the hire of Karen Cheung in Hong Kong.

Karen handles a broad range of commercial litigation and arbitration, and joins HFW as a partner from leading Hong Kong law firm Li & Partners. She previously worked at DLA Piper and Ince.

HFW has now added nine new disputes partners so far in 2021, including hires in Dubai, Singapore and Sydney.

It also continues the growth of the firm’s Asia-Pacific offering, following recent senior hires in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai. These hires have included three Asia-based office Managing Partners from US law firms.

Noel Campbell, Global Head of Litigation, HFW:

“We’re very pleased to welcome Karen to HFW. She is an outstanding commercial litigator with a strong following, as well as a busy practice for ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families in Hong Kong and China, which will complement our leading yacht and private jet practices.

“We have been in Hong Kong for more than 40 years and remain deeply committed to the market. We look forward to working with Karen to continue to drive our litigation and disputes offering across Hong Kong, China and the wider Asia region.”

Karen advises state-owned and multi-national clients on complex, cross-border disputes, including general, corporate and commercial litigation; white collar crime; regulatory matters; shareholder disputes; SFC investigations; and judicial reviews.

She also advises ultra-high net worth individuals and families in Hong Kong and China on a wide range of disputes – including contentious probate litigation, matrimonial proceedings and land disputes – and has more than a decade’s experience as an accredited mediator.

Karen is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators, and has handled over 50 international arbitrations – including commercial and shipping arbitration under the HKIAC, LMAA and ICC rules – as well as arbitration-related court proceedings.

She started her career as a barrister and spent more than a decade at international law firms before joining Li & Partners as a partner in the Litigation and Regulatory Department.

Karen currently serves as Vice Chair of the Greater Bay Area Young Talents Association (GBAYTA) (of which she is a founding member), Chair of the Legal Profession Committee of GBAYTA, Chair of the Youth Committee of the Hong Kong and Mainland Legal Profession Association (HKMLPA), and Secretary of HKMLPA.

Karen is trilingual in Cantonese, Putonghua and English.

Karen Cheung, Partner, HFW:

“I’m looking forward to joining a firm with such strength in disputes around the world and with such a long history in Hong Kong. HFW is one of the most active firms in the Hong Kong High Court and Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, and its extensive international network and premier client base provides an excellent platform for me to continue to build my practice as a litigator, arbitrator and mediator.”

HFW has more than 350 specialist disputes lawyers across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, and frequently litigates on behalf of clients in courts around the world.
