About Andrew
Andrew Chamberlain is a partner in HFW’s Admiralty team, which he joined in 1994 after qualifying as a solicitor. He was promoted to partner in 2003 and has since developed leading expertise in marine casualty response and litigation. His expertise spans salvage, collision, total loss, and oil pollution matters, as well as charterparty disputes, General Average, MOA and shipbuilding cases.
He acts for international salvors, shipowners, hull and machinery insurers, and P&I Clubs. Andrew has advised on many of the most significant marine casualties of the past two decades, involving container ships, passenger vessels, bulk carriers and tankers. These incidents have included groundings, fires, sinkings, and complex salvage operations across multiple jurisdictions, often with substantial environmental and regulatory implications.
Before entering the legal profession, Andrew served in the Royal Navy from 1985 to 1990, including sea service aboard HMS Invincible and HMS Ark Royal. He holds a degree in Geography & Economics from the University of London.
Andrew lectures regularly on salvage, wreck removal and casualty response, including at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute in Malta. He chaired the Lloyd’s Informa Salvage & Wreck Conference from 2012 to 2024 and will lead the inaugural Global Salvage and Wreck Forum in December 2025.
