More about James

James Plant is a Senior Associate in our Kuwait office. He has worked with us as a specialist construction lawyer for over 10 years. He was originally based in London before relocating to Dubai in 2015 and then to our Kuwait office in 2019.

James has specialised in construction and engineering disputes in the Middle East throughout his career. He has worked on projects throughout the region, but with a particular focus on Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He advises on disputes under Kuwaiti, Qatari and UAE law, as well as English law.

James has acted for contractors and employers on disputes relating to oil and gas projects, process plant, infrastructure, energy from waste, offshore wind, tunnelling, sub-sea cables and hydroelectric projects.

In Kuwait James works closely with our Arabic speaking litigation team to represent construction clients in disputes in the local courts. Our team in Kuwait has rights of audience before all Kuwaiti courts and we are therefore able represent our clients without instructing local counsel.

James is also experienced in arbitration, dispute adjudication boards, mediation and other forms of ADR. James' work often involves complex delay and disruption claims, variations and defects disputes. He was part of a team of HFW lawyers which successfully defended one of our construction clients in Kuwait in an LCIA Arbitration spanning 3 years and involving a claim of over US$ 2.5 billion.

James also advises construction clients during the execution of their projects. Working in a Project Counsel role, James advises on contractual entitlements and assists with correspondence, notices, variation procedures and claim submissions. He previously spent two years seconded to an international contractor in Qatar, performing this Project Counsel role whilst based on site with the client's contracts team.

James often writes legal articles and speaks at HFW seminars and external conferences. He is named as a recommended construction lawyer in Legal 500.
