Jonathan specialises in marine and energy/property insurance and reinsurance, and shipping. He acts mainly for insurers, reinsurers, brokers, energy companies, shipowners, insureds, and any others involved in the insurance chain. His practice is global, but he has significant experience in Latin American matters (he speaks Spanish and Portuguese, having lived in Brazil). He has also worked extensively with Eastern Europe, including Russia.

As to energy/property insurance, he acts in coverage and subrogation claims involving property and business interruption, pipeline damage/pollution, general liability, builders’ risks/CAR, DSU and Control of Well, in both onshore and offshore energy, and extending also to the powergen, windfarm, mining, and industrial sectors, often in claims involving Latin America . On the marine side, Jonathan acts in coverage and recovery/defence claims arising from losses worldwide, including hull and machinery damage, groundings/collision, salvage/towage, GA, defective bunkers, etc. He also acts in charterparty and bills of lading disputes.

Jonathan has been recommended in the top band for lawyers in the 'Insurance: Latin America-wide' sections of Chambers Latin America for all years since 2013. The 2016 guide comments that "The esteemed Jonathan Bruce is a popular choice for clients" and "he is a leader in the field". The 2018 guide quotes clients as saying that he is a "very well-regarded figure in insurance and reinsurance", and that "he is a good communicator and an excellent strategist; he is a very easy lawyer to work with". The 2019 guide quotes him described by clients as "outstanding", and "an excellent tactician and strategist in terms of driving litigation proceedings towards a successful conclusion", referring to his "stellar track record".

Jonathan is qualified in England and Wales.
