HFW underlines sustainability commitment with Planet Mark sponsorship

Global sector-focused law firm HFW has underlined its commitment to corporate responsibility with sponsorship of a Planet Mark event on sustainability.

The event, which took place in London on 1 February in association with the Legal Sustainability Alliance, called on businesses to take greater action to support the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN introduced 17 'Global Goals' in 2015 with the aim of building a better world and ending extreme poverty by 2030.

HFW's Corporate Responsibility strategy reflects our commitments to our colleagues, the environment and the communities in which we operate, and to creating a diverse and inclusive working environment.

The firm achieved Planet Mark certification in 2016 in recognition of our commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability.

HFW is also a member of the Legal Sustainability Alliance—a group of law firms and organisations that work collaboratively to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations and activities.

Our community work focuses on the global principles of access to justice, legal services and education, and employability, with lawyers and staff taking part in a wide range of pro bono and volunteering work that addresses local community needs.

We are also conscious of our environmental impact and have introduced carbon footprint reduction initiatives across our 18 offices worldwide, including recycling, regular use of video conferencing, schemes such as Cycle to Work, use of responsibly-sourced office supplies, auto shut-down computer equipment and motion sensitive lighting systems.

Last year, we completed a comprehensive, environmentally-focused refurbishment of our London office that reduced our total energy usage by more than 50 percent and included replacing over 1,000 conventional light fittings with LED 'skytiles'. We also recently stopped using plastic cutlery in our staff canteen as part of ongoing plans to move towards a zero-plastics environment.

The Planet Mark CEO Steve Malkin said at the time that our initiative was a "perfect example of how a company can combine the power of technology and the passion of people to make serious cuts in carbon emissions."
