Chris specialises in multi-jurisdictional litigation and arbitration arising out of international trade, commodity and derivative transactions as well as shipping.

He advises trading houses, producers, shipowners, charterers, banks and insurers on all aspects of their trading activities including, sale and purchase, freight and transportation. He also advises clients in relation to commercial disputes relating to commodities, including oil, gas, mineral ore and coal as well as soft commodities such as grain, rice and sugar.

Chris is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a former director of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA), and a Member of the LCIA, a Member of the Resolution Institute, Australia and a Supporting Member of the LMAA. He has experience in conducting claims before a number of institutions including GTA, LMAA, GAFTA, FOSFA, ICC, LCIA, CIETAC and under UNCITRAL rules and ad hoc arbitrations.

Chris is a registered foreign lawyer in Australia and qualified to practice in Hong Kong, England and Wales and, as HFW Shanghai office head, opened the firm's office in China in 1999.


The Melbourne office is widely recognised as being among Australia’s most distinguished maritime, trade, energy and insurance law practices.

The office handles a broad range of contentious and non-contentious work for international marine and insurance industry clients, multi-national and local mining and oil and gas companies, agricultural commodities producers and traders, financial institutions, port and terminal operators and logistics services providers, and construction contractors.
